Streamline Autonomous Mobile Robot Design With Cost-Effective and Rugged Compact Wheel Drives

Automated mobile robots (AMR) allow many manufacturing and distribution facilities to optimize their processes by transporting materials, packages and products without human intervention. With the demand for AMRs steadily increasing, engineers must take advantage of components that support flexible designs, match fast production timelines and deliver excellent performance.

Integrated motor-and-wheel drives are a key component of AMR design that cuts down on cost and installation complexity. For example, our new family of compact wheel drives (CWD) is a cost-effective integrated motor-and-wheel solution that delivers performance in a compact package on a tight deadline.

Purpose-Built AMR Components

Traditional motor, gearbox and wheel components — which were initially designed for stationary machines — create challenges when implemented in an AMR. Not only is it complex to specify and install these individual components, they usually don’t provide the performance and protection required of many AMR applications. These robots require compact components to reduce weight and increase efficiency while also being durable and rugged enough to support loads over a long life.

Meeting these requirements, the CWD500 and CWD1000 achieve exceptional performance in a compact package. Delivering smooth motion, the CWD family features an integrated design that simplifies installation by eliminating the hassle of combining a motor, gearbox and wheel.

A rugged design allows the CWD to support AMRs that operate in rough environments over a long life. The unit’s wheel drive features excellent power and torque density and generates very little noise, enabling the CWD’s use in AMR designs that must adhere to sound generation restrictions.

Both the CWD500 and CWD1000 also include an option for an integrated 24 VDC brake. Here are some quick specifications:

CWD500

  • 160-millimeter wheel diameter
  • As short as 150 millimeters
  • 25-Newton-meter continuous output torque
  • Maximum output velocity of 240 rpm
  • Optional 24 VDC brake provides 10 Nm torque
  • 178-millimeter length with brake

CWD1000

  • 160-millimeter wheel diameter
  • As short as 170 millimeters
  • 50-Newton-meter continuous output torque
