Slip Ring Customizations for Protection and Installation

A customer came to us with their custom slip ring specifications, requiring a specialized design for protection and system integration. We developed a slip ring that features five signal circuits in a sturdy aluminum housing with an IP51 rating. This design also consists of stator lead exits directly integrated into the housing. Along with custom rotor leads cut to exactly specified lengths, this slip ring design reduced overall operational complexity and allowed the customer to seamlessly integrate it into their system.

Another customer wanted a custom slip ring with a design focus on seamless integration into their overall system with zero adjustments on their end. Working with them, our engineers developed a slip ring with custom stator and rotor pin-out leads according to their exact electrical requirements. Additionally, we designed the stator leads to facilitate direct PCB integration, ensuring compatibility with their system for a simple installation. We also incorporated a custom flange into the design so the customer could effortlessly mount the slip ring without any modifications.

Adjusting Motor Performance and Custom Mounting

We created a custom motor according to a customer’s special output and mounting requirements. For mounting, we designed a custom bell and propeller mount for easy system integration. To meet the desired motor output, our engineers adjusted the motor windings over multiple iterations to ensure the motor met precise specifications.

Consistent communication with our customer was crucial to the iterative design process; their feedback allowed us to deliver the exact solution they needed. After three iterations, we achieved a design with the perfect balance of performance and efficiency. In a similar project, we even took the time to work through six iterations, allowing us to exceed the customer’s expectations.

Industry-Specific Modifications

Orbex products — whether standard or custom — are built to withstand the harshest conditions. Components designed for oil and gas applications must meet some of the toughest requirements for durability, performance and installation. For example, one of our customers required a slip ring with a large inner diameter (ID) for seamless system integration. In addition to meeting the customer’s size specifications, we also engineered the slip ring to handle the tough, heavy-duty environment of oil and gas.

The resulting slip ring features a 280-millimeter ID for a precise and reliable fit. Featuring 304 stainless steel construction, the slip ring is corrosion-resistant and well-equipped for long-term reliability in the oil and gas environment. An IP65 rating allows the slip ring to resist dust and water. For added protection, we also incorporated an extra protection cap layer to shield the internal components. Because this rugged slip ring is so large and heavy, we designed strategic pickup points on the slip ring to facilitate easier handling and installation. Even though we built this oil and gas slip ring to stand up in harsh conditions, it still provided the precision and efficiency Orbex is known for.
