Flat BLDC Motors: Compact and Versatile

Flat BLDC Motors: Compact and Versatile

If your machine design requires a high-performance DC motor within a limited space, a flat BLDC motor is an excellent choice. This reliable brushless DC motor style offers high speeds and provides high torque density, accurate positioning, smooth operation and low cogging — even for space-constrained designs. Flat BLDC motors come with a wide selection of features to satisfy many torque, speed and output requirements, making them versatile for use in a wide variety of applications. Here are just some of the applications where you’ll find flat motors:

  • Robots that use articulating arms and joints to put parts into position.
  • Portable or handheld medical devices, handheld instruments and medical robots.
  • General industrial equipment, such as pumps and fans.
  • Semiconductor fabrication equipment requiring precise, high-speed motion.
  • Packaging equipment.
  • Any design that needs a robust motor to fit into a tight installation space.

Flat BLDC Motors Suit a Variety of Applications

One family of flat motors offers all the benefits of traditional, high-performance motors along with a space-saving design. Orbex EC Series flat DC brushless motors — with outer diameters that range from ~43 to ~90 millimeters — are available with a variety of torques, speeds and heights, and they provide precise, closed-loop control for a diversity of applications.

The family consists of 10 series of flat DC motors and two series of flat DC motors with integrated encoders. Specifications include torques from 18.7 to 729 millinewton meters (nom.), output power from 12 to 220 watts and voltages from 9 to 60 volts (nom.). Maximum speeds range from 1,000 to 10,000 rpm. Additional features and specifications include:

  • Integrated digital Hall sensor.
  • Low cogging.
  • Smooth operation.
  • Neodymium magnet.
  • Operating temperature range: -40 to +100°C and -20 to +100°C (EC9027 Series).
  • Weight range: 57 to 600 grams.

Two flat brushless DC motor families are available with optional encoders to provide closed loop feedback and additional speed control.

The Performance You Need in a Compact Motor

For a wide range of applications from robotics to packaging and medical equipment, space limitations are inevitable. Flat motors, such as those in Orbex’s EC Series of brushless DC motors, are well-suited for these and many other space-constrained applications. When a machine design calls for a compact motor with high rotational speed and good torque density, Orbex BLDC motors give you that option without sacrificing features and performance.
